The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have adopted the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE of 27 January 2003).

It obliges manufacturers and distributors to take back used electrical and electronic equipment free of charge for re-use, recycling or disposal in line with environmental protection requirements. The obligation is based on the principle of producer responsibility.

In the case of new products, environmental protection considerations and recycling ability must already be taken into account right from the product development stage in future.
